Elvina Mitchell, daughter of Joel and Lucinda Mitchell, was born January 8, 1845, on the old Mitchell farm north of town, now owned by S.W. McCormick. She was stricken with pneumonia on Monday morning, May 1, 1916, and passed away Saturday noon, May 6, 1916, at the age of 71 years, 3 months, and 28 days. She was married to Marcus O. Sullivan on August 14, 1863, and with the exception of nine years of their married life, they have lived in the present home, 5 miles north-west of Waveland, and 1-1/2 miles north of Byron, since that time. On February 26, 1876 she and her husband united with the Primitive Baptist church at Old Union, north of Waveland, under the pastorate of Brother Jesse Gobin, and were baptized by the same minister the following April. Since then she has been a faithful member and attended services as long as the health of herself and her husband permitted. She was the eldest of a family of eight children: Elvina Sullivan, Emily Starkey, of Oklahoma, Lewis W. Mitchell, better known as Jake, Agness Phipps, Mary Nolen, of Wallace, Ind., Noben T. Mitchell, better known as Bob, Casper Budd, and Alice Oliver. Jake, Agnes, Casper, and Alice have gone on before her and will meet her on the other shore. Aunt Vine, as she was best known, was a very loving person and spent the greater part of her last years at her home, doing all she could to make things comfortable for her husband, who has been an invalid for several years. She was loved by everybody who knew her and her acquaintance stretched for miles about her home. No children ever came to bless this union, and this fact made the old couple more companionable, and will make the husband's loss more sorrowful. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, two sisters and one brother, with a host of other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by everyone in the neighborhood, but let it soothe the heart broken husband to know that she is not dead, but resting in the home of her Savior, who went to prepare a place for her, where there is neither sorrow nor pain, but everlasting peace and joy. "One by one our loved ones fall; No one hears the door that opens when they pass beyond our call; Soft as loosened leaves of roses, one by one our loved ones fall." -- kbz
